We’ve learned more about the three men arrested Tuesday after a Houston police officer was shot and wounded while responding to a home invasion in the Spring Branch area.
Two of the suspects have prior convictions and were out on bond for unrelated cases, according to court records.
Raymond Perez
Raymond Perez — the alleged shooter, according to the Houston Police Department — is charged with aggravated assault of a public servant, aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The 35-year-old was out on bond on charges of evading arrest and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon on May 6, 2024.
Here’s a list of other previous charges against him.
- 2017: Convicted of burglary
- 2008: 2 arrests for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon; convicted in 2009
Michael Perez
Michael Perez, 38, is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in connection with Tuesday’s home invasion.
He was out on bond on charges of evading arrest and burglary of a vehicle on May 6, 2024.

Brian Garcia Chavez
Brian Garcia Chavez, 18, is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.
There is no record of previous felony charges in Harris County.
Home invasion victim tied up in front of 2 small children
Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz said the whole thing started Tuesday morning when two men knocked on the front door of a home on Alderney Drive near Antoine Drive The homeowner later told us that his daughter saw them holding a DoorDash bag and thought they were at the wrong house so she answered the door to let them know.
“As soon as she opened the door, he pulled a gun out of a DoorDash bag and he forced entry,” homeowner Ben Bates told us.
He said the robbers tied his daughter up in front of her two small children.
“They zip-tied my daughter and she had her 1-year-old and 3-year-old, they proceeded to ransack the house,” Bates said. “They didn’t do anything with the kids but they did have her walking them through the rooms trying to find stuff to take.”
An alert neighbor saw what happened and called 911. HPD officers were there within four minutes, according to Diaz.
“That neighbor saved the day. Being neighbors and caring for each other won the day today,” Diaz said.
The chief said when two officers arrived, they went inside and found the woman and one young child in the living room.
Diaz said one suspect, later identified as Michael Perez, was being handcuffed when Raymond Perez walked into the room and opened fire, striking Officer S. Durfee in the leg.
“The suspect came out of a bedroom and shot immediately at the officer. The officer returned fire, did not strike suspect and that was the suspect who ran out the back,” Diaz said.
The other officer arrested Michael Perez and then applied a tourniquet to Durfee’s leg, likely saving his life, according to Diaz.
Another neighbor said Raymond Perez knocked over a trash can trying to get into his backyard and tried to hide his weapon on his car’s tire.
“To look out your kitchen window and see three police officers with guns drawn, telling him not to move, it scared the hell out of me,” Bruce Thomas told us.
Brian Garcia Chavez, the accused getaway driver, was arrested about six hours later on Hollister Road near W. Tidwell Drive in northwest Houston, HPD said.
Injured officer released from hospital
Officer Durfee was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital and later released. He’s “expected to make a full recovery,” the Houston Police Department said.
The woman and her children weren’t hurt.
Surveillance video obtained by KHOU 11 showed a white car in front of the victim’s home and you hear a woman screaming as a man jumps out of the vehicle and runs inside the home.
